What is a Fisherman's Gansey?
Welcome to listen to lectures with
Anna Josefsson
Sunday 12/10 at 10.30 – 11.30
A Fisherman's Gansey is a knitted functional garment with a rich history!
Anna Josefsson has delved into the culture of fishing sweaters in the North Sea region and has documented how they have been knitted and used. Here she tells more about the sweaters' traditions, garment construction, and knitting techniques.
The fishing sweaters from the different locations around the North Sea have both similarities and differences. Each garment has its own history – symbols, colour and choice of yarn vary. Ganseys have been worn by fishermen and sailors around the British Isles and the English Channel. Historical ganseys are often named after the places where they were documented and different areas of Britain have developed different styles and patterns.
Anna grew up by the sea in Bohuslän and has a lifelong interest in knitting, especially garments used at sea. With over 15 years of experience as a course leader and a pedagogical degree in her background, Anna combines her knowledge of textile techniques with a passion for ganseys. She has taught at knitting festivals and textile events both in Sweden and abroad. She creates textiles and teaches various techniques in her company Vinterverkstan, but is also a seaweed diver, fisher and teaches biology.

Presentation
Course leader Camilla Sten.
Together with my brother, I run Hamra Gård in Åsa, an organic farm with, among other things, Ryafår. The sheep give us lovely wool yarns in natural colors and these are the ones we dye during my courses. I am trained in plant dyeing, among other things, on the farm clearing and have over 20 years of successful and unsuccessful plant dyeing experiences under my belt. I have worked with traditional and historical dye plants from our local area, as well as more modern techniques and imported pigments and plants. Holding courses and exchanging experiences is perhaps the most fun thing about the craft and I am really looking forward to spreading the craft and creativity during the two courses at Rydal!
There is yarn from my own organic sheep for participants to purchase, either during the course or at our table at the fair. Regular price (for 2- and 3-ply natural dyed) is 250 SEK/hour, course participants have a 15% discount (on 2- and 3-ply yarns) throughout the entire Knitting and Spinning Party

Wool craze
Ulldille is making a book about Swedish wool that has the working name More wool for the people. The book will spread knowledge about our fantastic wool and make it better known as an environmentally friendly and sustainable resource. Swedish wool is just waiting to be put to more use, in a wide variety of uses!
We who make the book are called Pia Mattzon, author and writer, and Anna Sigge, freelance photographer.
With us, you can pre-purchase the book as support for our continued work, for which we are doing a crowdfunding collection right up to printing, or directly on the spot buy Ulldille's wall calendar with photos of Anna.
You can also squeeze some lovely wool, check out our fully woven sheep traps from sheep that are still alive and see some different crafting techniques to use with wool; from unwashed raw wool, dyed ullocks and lovely cardamom, to knitting yarns.”

Yarn joy
My name is Kerstin and I run Garnglädje, a cozy yarn shop in Sätila. For over 15 years I have shared my passion for yarn and knitting with our amazing customers. For me, yarn is not just a material – it's pure joy!
My love for yarn started as a child, and since then I have explored everything from knitting to spinning my own yarn, something that is close to my heart. For a time I also had my own sheep, and I learned a lot about the unique properties of wool by cutting and spinning the yarn myself.
At Garnglädje you will find a carefully selected range of yarns from brands such as Isager, Geilsk, Ullcentrum, BC-garn, Noro and Kremke. I am passionate about sustainability and always strive to offer the highest quality yarns that are made with care and without synthetic materials.

My Barklind/Av Bark Hand Dyed Yarns
My Barklind, who runs Atelje av Bark, works with hand-dyed yarn - in the traditional way with pigments from nature - and writes and designs knitting patterns for others to create through.
For My, hand knitting is true slow fashion and My wants to give all hand knitting yarn lovers an alternative to synthetic hand dyed yarns by hand dyeing with pigments from our nature.
Atelje av Bark strives to create a new generation of yarns with as low a carbon footprint as possible. By combining yarn selection and traditional plant dyeing with new methods, colors and collections are created for contemporary and future yarn crafts. The goal is to offer hand knitters the opportunity to choose carefully colored yarns and to create garments that suit both body and mind.

Wistas
At Wistas, we think it's important that the animals that give us the wool are doing well. That's why our yarns and cardigans only contain wool from the farm's own animals - we don't buy in any fibres. We make our own knitting packages with yarn spun from our fine Angora rabbits mixed with the fine-fibre wool from Jämtland sheep. Our ryatacks are involved and contribute to warm strong ryangora yarn for durable socks. We also took and made carded fleeces in a mixture of Jämtland and Angora wool. First class wool for spinning and second class for felting. Wistas is also a dealer of our nearest spinning coat manufacturer, Kromski, and to Rydal we bring spinning coats, cards and the like. We will bring wool so that visitors can try out both spinning robes, slivers and cards
Wistas is run by Ingela and Per Hedlund from Västerlanda. You can contact us on tel: 0703-49 63 32 or email; ingela@hedlundmail.se
