West Swedish championship in flax spinning
13 October at 13.00
During Stick and Spinnfesten you can compete, or watch the competition where the participants have to spin as long and even a line of linen as possible. May the best thread win!
Location: International Tissue Center
More information at: https://www.vgregion.se/f/kulturforvaltningen/kultur-och-konstarter/slojd/aktuellt/masterskap-linspinning/
Competition setup
The competition consists of spinning a smooth and long thread within 30 minutes. The wire must have a fine play of between Nm 16 and Nm 30.
Prerequisites
• Materials: You are assigned a hand-measured rope.
• Own equipment: Bring your own spin coat and fiber attachment. You choose which fiber attachment you use and how you prepare it. Hedges are on site, but you are welcome to bring your own.
• Preparation: You get time to prepare the material and the spin coat. Any line attachment and way of dressing the attachment may be used.
Assessment categories
The competition is judged in three categories, where the points are added to a total score. In the event of a tie, the one with the highest score for thread quality wins. If these points are also equal, the one who spins the longest wins.
1. Preparation and implementation:
• The preparations consist of crocheting and preparing the fiber attachment, so that all material can be spun without problems.
• The spinning lasts 30 minutes, during which judges walk around and study the work.
• The spinning should take place with a calm rhythm and even flushing. Before the competition starts, a judge attaches tape around the wire to mark the starting position.
• The line may be spun with water or linseed decoction and reeled off dry. Wet spinning is rewarded.
- Height and weight:
• When the time is up, the yarn is unwound to be weighed and measured. Two interruptions on the thread pass without remark, more interruptions lead to point deductions.• The desired play on the spun thread is between Nm 16 and Nm 30.
• Weight and length of the yarn are anonymized for the assessment.
- Thread quality:
• Aim to spin an even thread with few protruding fibers and an even twist that produces a usable thread.
Other information
• It costs SEK 100 to participate in the competition, the fee is paid on site.
• The competition is organized by Hemslöjdskonsulterna VGR, Föreningen Internationellt vävcentrum, De sju hradernas hemslöjsförening and others.
